Chapter 6 of The Search Console Fix Book: four causes that look identical on the chart, tested in order.

This free Google Search Console guide is chapter 6 of The Search Console Fix Book. It explains the four causes of rising impressions with flat clicks: a Google counting change, AI answers taking the click, a weaker snippet and lost rankings. Why Impressions Rise While Clicks Don't
The most common complaint in search has four possible causes, and they look identical on the chart. Two you can fix. Two you can only understand.
- The impressions line rises or holds, and the clicks line stays flat or falls.
- Click-through rate drops on pages whose position hardly moved.
- A page that brought steady visits now shows thousands of impressions and a handful of clicks.
- Most advice picks one cause, usually 'rewrite your titles', and ignores the rest.
- You can't tell which part of the gap is yours to close.
The Free Chapter Tests Four Causes in Order
Pick a cause to see what it looks like, how to check it and what to do about it.
- Set two comparison periods and tick clicks, impressions, CTR and position.
- Sort the Queries tab by the change in clicks.
- Compare question searches with buying searches to see where CTR moved.
- Apply the decision rule to each cause.
- Run the chapter's prompt on your own export.
Cause 1 · you can't fix it, you can understand it
Google changed how it counted impressions
- What it looks like
- Impressions jump or drop on a date that matches a Google logging change, while clicks stay steady.
- What to do
- Compare clicks, annotate the date and move on. Google's own data anomalies page says a logging error kept Search Console from reporting impressions accurately from 13 May 2025 until 27 April 2026.
- Check Google's data anomalies page first, because it costs nothing.
- Compare clicks, which were not affected.
- Annotate the date and stop chasing a ghost.
Chapter 6 · the decision rule
MEASUREMENT Nothing to fix. Compare clicks, annotate 27 April 2026, move on.
Cause 2 · you can fix part of it
An AI answer or search feature gave the reader what they needed
- What it looks like
- Click-through rate falls on informational searches such as definitions and 'how to', while buying searches hold steady.
- What to do
- Become the page the answer quotes, and shift effort toward searches an AI answer can't satisfy, such as prices, bookings, local and product choice.
- Split question searches from buying searches with a regex filter.
- Compare CTR in each group at the same positions.
- Write answer-first for the searches an AI answer can quote.
Chapter 6 · the decision rule
AI ANSWERS Partly fixable. Become the page the answer quotes (chapter 20), and shift effort toward searches an AI answer can't satisfy.
Cause 3 · you can fix it
A competitor's title beat yours
- What it looks like
- Click-through rate falls at a steady position on buying searches too, starting on a date when you or a competitor changed something.
- What to do
- Rewrite titles and descriptions so they match the words people search, in small batches you can measure.
- Check whether Google rewrote your title.
- Rewrite five to ten pages at a time.
- Record the date before you touch the next batch.
Chapter 6 · the decision rule
SNIPPET Fixable. Rewrite titles and descriptions (chapter 15).
Cause 4 · you can fix it
Your positions fell at the query level
- What it looks like
- The drop lines up with a core update or a site change, and competitors now sit above you for searches you used to win.
- What to do
- Push pages from page two, refresh decaying posts or fix cannibalization, depending on what the data shows.
- Look at position at the query level, not the page average.
- Match the drop to a core update or a site change.
- Choose a fix from the chapters the rule points to.
Chapter 6 · the decision rule
RANKINGS Fixable. Page 2 push (chapter 16), refresh (chapter 19), or cannibalization fixes (chapter 8).

What Google Says About Impressions Data
Google's data anomalies page says a logging error prevented Search Console from accurately reporting impressions from 13 May 2025 until 27 April 2026. It says the issue is resolved, that you may see impressions decrease, and that clicks were not affected.
Google's guidance on AI features says sites that appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in overall search traffic in Search Console, in the Web search type.
And the chapter treats both as causes to test, not excuses to stop looking.
Free Google Search Console Guide: Frequently Asked Questions
What is in the free Google Search Console guide?
It is chapter 6 of The Search Console Fix Book, on why impressions rise while clicks fall. It covers four causes, a confirm step, a decision rule and a prompt that tests them.
Why are my impressions up and my clicks down?
Four causes look identical on the chart: a Google counting change, AI answers taking the click, a weaker snippet or lost rankings. The chapter tests them in that order.
How do I check whether it is a measurement problem?
Check Google's data anomalies page and compare clicks, which were not affected by the 2025 to 2026 impressions logging error. If the change lines up with a logged date, annotate it and move on.
Can I fix impressions but no clicks?
Partly. You can fix a weak snippet and lost rankings, and you can adapt to AI answers. You can only understand a counting change.
What is prompt GSC12?
GSC12 is a prompt for Claude or ChatGPT that separates the four causes, estimates how much of the lost click share each explains and routes every fixable item to the right chapter.
Is it really free?
Yes. It's $0 on Whop. On Gumroad it is listed as pay what you want, with a minimum of zero.
Do I need a paid Search Console plan?
No. Search Console is free, and the chapter works from its Performance report.
How do I get the rest of the book?
The Search Console Fix Book has 26 chapters, 24 prompts and 40 regex patterns. The edition table on its page lists where to buy it.
More questions
What regex filters does the chapter use?
It applies one pattern for definitions and comparisons and one for ready-to-buy searches, so you can compare click-through rate in each group.
How far back should I compare?
The chapter suggests comparing the last three months against the same three months last year.
Does it cover AI Overviews?
Yes. AI answers are cause two, and the chapter explains how to shift effort toward searches an AI answer can't satisfy.
Does the chapter work with Claude and ChatGPT?
Yes. Prompt GSC12 is plain text and works in either.
Is the data in the chapter real?
The worked examples use a fictional business, and the book says so. The case study in chapter 26 uses real, anonymized data.
Who wrote it?
Haris Siddique Budhani, who has worked in content and SEO since 2011, built content teams from scratch and trained more than 40 writers.
