Why a Vision Board Needs a Plan Behind It
A board shows what you want. It does not say when you will start. In four experiments published in 2011, Annika Kappes and Gabriele Oettingen found that people who indulged in positive fantasies about a future they wanted had less energy for it than people who also questioned that future. The practical lesson is to put a plan next to the picture.
That is why the workbook asks for an obstacle and an if-then plan for every goal. Peter Gollwitzer and Paschal Sheeran reviewed 94 tests of if-then planning in 2006 and found a medium-to-large effect on reaching goals (d = 0.65). The kit does not promise that number for you. It builds the habit the research points to.
