The Debt Payoff Spreadsheet is a workbook for up to 10 debts that works out, month by month, when each debt is paid off, when you are debt free and how much interest you pay. You choose the snowball method (smallest balance first), the avalanche method (highest interest rate first) or your own order, plus an extra monthly payment. It also shows what the same debts would cost if you paid only the minimums. It comes as a blank and an example-filled workbook with a 4-page guide for Excel and Google Sheets.
- Snowball, avalanche or your own order, with every minimum paid first
- The debt-free month, total interest and the interest and months you save against minimums only
- A monthly check-in that shows whether your real balance is ahead of or behind the plan
- 10
- debts
- 120
- months in the schedule
- 3
- payoff methods
- 36
- months of check-ins
Why a Debt Plan Needs an Estimated Date, Not Just a Total
A total balance tells you how bad it is. It does not tell you which debt to attack first, or when you will be done.
- You pay a little extra on whichever bill is due and see no change.
- You cannot tell whether the snowball or the avalanche costs less on your debts.
- A calculator gives one number and no month-by-month plan.
- When a debt clears, the money it freed drifts into the rest of the budget.
- You never find out whether you are ahead of plan or behind it.

Limits and Honesty
Interest is the balance times the yearly rate divided by 12, rounded to the cent, and payments are assumed to land at the end of each month. A debt that is not cleared within 120 months shows 'Over 10 years'. Fixed loan schedules, interest charged daily, late fees, promotional rates that change and balance transfers are not modelled.
Lenders round and time interest differently, so treat the dates and totals as a close estimate and compare them with your statements. It is a planning tool, not financial, credit, tax or legal advice. If you are struggling with debt, a non-profit credit counselling service in your country can help.
AI tools were used to help write the wording and the code that builds the workbook, the guide, the pictures and the video. The workbook's results were checked against an independent calculation of the example data. Personal use. Please do not resell, share or upload the files.

Snowball pays the smallest balance first. Avalanche pays the highest interest rate first. The workbook also takes a custom order. Every method pays every minimum, and the spare money goes to the first debt in the order.
Does it work in Google Sheets?
It uses ordinary formulas and no macros, so it runs in Excel and in Google Sheets. In Google Sheets, use the link in the PDF guide to make your own copy, or upload the .xlsx to Google Drive, open it and choose File, Save as Google Sheets. Formulas, dropdowns and colors usually carry across, but chart styling can change a little, so check the main tabs after you import.

What does it not model?

More questions
